Bastle House, Housesteads Roman Fort, Bardon Mill, Northumberland
Reconstruction drawing of the early 17th century bastle house. The ruins of the bastle are built against the east guard-tower of the south gate of Housesteads Roman fort. The remains of its walls stand to a height of 1m. It is difficult to date the bastle exactly, but it may date from around 1600. The Housesteads bastle was one of several used by the notorious Armstrong brothers in the 17th century to hide the cattle they robbed from their neighbours.
