Higher Flax Mills, Castle Cary, Somerset

The majority of the buildings on this site were built by T.S. Donne from 1870 onwards. They were for the production of warp threads for horsehair fabric, twine and rope. The Castle Cary mills were forced to turn to powered machines after child labour was stopped by the 1870 Education Act.
