Margate Pier, Margate, Kent

Crowds line the pier in Margate whilst sailing boats can be seen out to sea. By the end of the 19th century Margate was already a well-established holiday resort. Margate Pier was designed by Eugenius Birch in 1856. It was extended in 1875-8 and an entertainment pavilion was built at the pier head. The pier closed in 1976 on safety grounds and was virtually destroyed by a storm on 11th January 1978.
