Prospect of Swindon Railway Works and Village, Wiltshire

Edward Snell came to Swindon in 1843 aged 22, rising to become Superintendent (assistant to the works manager). In 1849 he made two watercolour paintings of New Swindon, which show the GWR Works in great detail and the layout of the settlement built for the workforce.
