House. Circa 1300 with C15, C17, C19 and C20 alterations and additions. Possibly built for Thomas de Stanton. Timber-framed and plastered with some exposed timber framing. Red plain-tiled roofs with some diapering. That to hall (left) half-hipped to left with 2 gabled dormers. The right forward cross wing with plaster to C15 gable apex and hipped to front C20 extension. 2 red brick chimney stacks to left and a single chimney stack to right. One storey to left, 2 storeys to right cross wing with C20 single storey front extension. 2:3:1 window range of mainly C20 leaded casements, the hall dormers with C19 style 2 light casements with centre transoms. A vertically boarded door to each range. The C15/C17 cross wing, 3 bays, inglenook fireplace with mantel beam over, centre tenons to floor joists, halved and bridled and halved and bladed top plate scarfs. Brick floor. 2 good cast iron Victorian fireplaces to first floor. The large, 2 bays, 2 pole aisled hall in the grand manner is open to the roof with a floored service bay and chamber over. This bay with arch bracing to the wall between the hall and slightly curved passing braces. 3 original doorways and a fragment of one other doorway at north end. 2 of the doorways have original 2 centred arches and moulded sunken circles with carved quatrefoils to spandrels. Part of the heavy moulded ashlar plate with quadrants and fillets in-situ with peg holes visible where the plate has been removed. A semi-octagonal oriel originally projected from the north west bay, this with curved braces from the main frame. Large octagonal columns with capitals of 2 superimposed scroll orders support the cambered hollow-chamfered tie beams. Arched moulded braces spring from the columns forming 2 centred arches. Similar braces support the hollow chamfered top plates. Ashlar pieces, soulaces and collars to each rafter pair. Original timber sooted. The huge C15 inserted red brick inglenook fireplace with heavy, approximately 14 feet cambered mantel beam. Iron fireback to hearth. RCHM 6.
