4/219 Walled gardens, cottages, greenhouses and tower to 16.3.84 south-west of Tylney Hall GV II*

Walled gardens, cottages, greenhouses and tower. One greenhouse possibly circa 1851, reputedly moved from the Great Exhibition, Kensington. Remainder 1899-1904, the tower and cottages against outer garden wall by Robert Weir Schultz, the rest by R. Selden Wornum. Eastern walled garden: Red brick walls ten feet high, encompassing area 60 yards by forty, (approx.), with stone copings. Coped crow-stepped gables to arches with triple keystones. Greenhouse on north side, c. 1851, on red brick plinth. Glazed with frame part wood and part cast-iron. 5 ranges with lower ranges flanking centre. Central range with decorative ridge cresting and projecting hipped and bowed porch; this range probably the only original part, small gabled shed outside south-west corner of wall. Western walled garden: Red brick walls ten feet high, encompassing area 60 yards by 40, (approx.), with stone copings. Coped crow-stepped gables to arches with triple keystones. Red brick tower at north-west corner of stripped Central European gothic silhouette, by Schultz. Windows at various levels with open loggia at top stage under steep pyramidally-hipped bellcast roof on timber supports. Projecting octagonal stair-turret on west side. Tower flanked by low range to left with irregular fenestration and octagonal cupola, inside and against west wall of garden and by low range to right, inside and against north wall. This range with symmetrical 1½ storey gardeners' cottages with two cross-gables and verandah on timber poles between. Jettied gables with oriels below jetties. Smaller cross-gabled cottage to either side the whole arrayed symmetrically. Pair of red brick gate-piers with stone cornices and ball-finials, to rear of north range linking with red brick wall of north garden. North garden: Red brick wall with moulded stone coping on north-east side, with gabled stone shed along inside flank, open to right as cart-sheds, low and with timber supports. Wall continues at right-angles to west for ten yards to a second pair of gate-piers with stone cornices and ball-finials.
