SPELSBURY DITCHLEY PARK SP3821-3921 18/167 The Lion Court, walled gardens and Lion Gate to NE of Ditchley House

GV II

Courtyard walls, walled gardens and entrance gates. Probably c.1722 by James Gibbs for the 2nd Earl of Litchfield, possibly restored early C20. Coursed squared limestone with flat ashlar copings. High walls extend north-eastwards from the garden front and north pavilion of Ditchley House (q.v.) to 2 rectangular walled gardens, between which are the ashlar piers of the Lion Gate, with moulded caps and standing lions holding cartouches of the Royal Arms. Wrought-iron gates with scrolled lock rails are probably C18, but piers are inscribed 1914. Sides of walled gardens have central doorways now mostly built up. (Ditchley Park is included in the English Heritage Historic Gardens Register at Grade II*)
