TQ3005SW BELMONT 577-1/25/47 (North West side) Nos.5 AND 6 and attached walls

GV II

Semi-detached houses. c1858. Stucco and knapped flint, roof of slate. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys over basement, 3-window range. Both houses have a stuccoed wing set back at the side, but only that on No.5 is an entrance wing, the entrance to No.6 being in the main front. On the front the flint is framed into panels by stucco storey bands and quoins. Steps up to flat-arched entrance with sidelights and overlight, set back in both cases under a round-arched porch with pilasters, archivolt, keystone and cornice. All windows flat-arched; canted bays to ground floor, 2 to No.5, one to No.6, with mullions treated as pilasters with stepped capitals, cornice and panelled parapet as part of a broad storey band; first- and second-floor windows have eared architraves, those to the second floor simplified, and the windows now breaking up into the frieze; boxed eaves; hipped roof; stacks to sides and party wall. The entrance bay to No.5 is plainly detailed; that to No.6 has details matching the main front and a return in Dyke Road treated similarly but all in stucco. INTERIOR: not inspected. Low coped garden wall with squat corniced gate piers.
