Assistant Science Advisor

This is a unique opportunity for you to take on a newly developed role, utilising your archaeological science skills and experience, within a heritage management environment. Joining our Science Advice Team you will be working alongside the West Midlands & South West Science Advisor providing advice and capacity building support. We will support you throughout this fixed term contract to gain great insights and experience to develop your career.

What will you discover? As the public body that champion`s England`s historic environment, we help people understand, value and care for a diverse range of cultural records from the stone-age to the contemporary. Joining us you will continue your own development, working alongside colleagues that believe that continuously developing their expertise is central to their success.

You will be the first point of contact for science advice in the South West, for Inspectors of Ancient Monuments, curators and contractors. Day to day you will undertake capacity-building activities and provide planning application advice to Planning Group colleagues and other casework. Similarly, you will also provide supervised advice to Local Authority archaeological staff in response to developer-funded archaeology and to bodies/agencies such as The Environment Agency and Natural England.

You will enjoy communicating and engaging with a wide variety of people. Alongside having gained some experience as an archaeological science practitioner in either archaeology or heritage related field. Ideally you will have knowledge of the archaeology and historic environment of the South West, but essentially you have an academic or professional qualification in science, relevant to the investigation and management of the historic environment. You will also have an understanding of the logistics of providing science advice in the context of planning-led casework.

The post is based in the South West, based within our Bristol Office with regular travel to sites and meetings within the region, with some overnight stays required.
