Berkshire Archaeology Historic Environment Record

Description

Berkshire Archaeology is an archaeological advice service for the five unitary authorities of East Berkshire - Reading, Bracknell Forest, Slough, Windsor & Maidenhead and Wokingham. We are based at the Berkshire Record Office in Reading and are part of Reading Borough Council's Museum and Town Hall service. The Berkshire Archaeology Historic Environment Record (HER) covers the five authorities as above, and consists of a computerised database (running Exegesis HBSMR software) with many different record types, linked to a geographical information system (GIS). There are currently over 6600 records on the database, reflecting the rich and diverse heritage of East Berkshire, and covering a wide variety of sites, and all periods from Palaeolithic to Modern. We also have an extensive library of "grey literature" (e.g. fieldwork reports), files of correspondence and notes, photographs and publications such as journals, so there is often additional information to that provided on the Heritage Gateway. The HER is available for consultation by appointment - alternatively you can make an enquiry by phone, email or letter. Please note that if you are using Berkshire Archaeology HER information for commercial purposes (e.g. for a desk-based assessment or other development-related study) you will need to consult our HER Officer and there will be a charge for this service. Our database is constantly evolving in the light of new finds and research, and we are aiming to update our records on the Heritage Gateway every six months. If in the mean time you spot anything inaccurate or have further information about any of the sites mentioned, please use the feedback button to email us and let us know.

Visitor facilities

Access to the HER database and paper files is at present by appointment only via the HER Officer. Desk space is available for visitors at our office in the Royal Berkshire Archives, where we house a small reference collection of monographs, reference books and local journals. Our HER paper files are stored in a separate building so these need to be pre-ordered to be made available during a visit.

When requesting to view material please provide as much detail as possible. Please note that we are undertaking an ongoing programme of digitisation of our paper archive, so many requests can now be processed remotely and may not require a visit.
