The Colchester Historic Environment Record is maintained by the Museum Heritage Team of Colchester Borough Council. The town is included within the Essex Historic Environment Record (EHER) and the Colchester HER supplements this resource by providing more intensive detail of the archaeology within the historic town, covering 20 sq km. This database includes nearly 3000 monument records and encompasses detail on the substantial Iron Age Oppida and Roman remains in Colchester, including important areas of settlement and industry, sites of high status burials, the Roman walled town, suburbs and cemeteries, as well as the medieval suburbs and ecclesiastical precincts of the town, the port at New Hythe, and the bulk of the Civil War siege circuit, up to AD 1700. The database is held at the Museum Resource Centre, Colchester, and can be viewed by prior appointment.
