The Winchester Historic Environment Record (HER) is the most comprehensive source of information on the historic environment for the large rural district of Winchester in Hampshire. The HER, which is a publicly available resource, contains over 7000 records relating to archaeological sites, finds, historic buildings and landscapes ranging in date from the Palaeolithic through to the modern era. Records of past fieldwork events such as excavations, field walking and geophysical surveys that have taken place within the district are also detailed within the HER. The HER also comprises an archive of unpublished fieldwork reports (grey literature), other supporting information and has a small collection of aerial photographs. Access can also be provided to historic maps of the Winchester district and historic city of Winchester, historic photographs and an extensive library curated by Winchester Museums. The Winchester Urban Archaeological Database comprises a detailed record of the archaeological resource of the historic city of Winchester and its hinterland from the prehistoric period up to circa AD 1700. Currently information on c.700 major archaeological monuments recorded within the UAD is available via the Heritage Gateway. The Winchester HER includes the Winchester Urban Archaeological Database and contains information on archaeological monuments and findspots ranging from the prehistoric to the post-medieval period, including some industrial and WWI & II and Cold War monuments and archaeological events. PPG16 fieldwork reports and other grey literature available for consultation. Commercial enquires are subject to a consultation fee.
