The Nottinghamshire Historic Environment Record (HER - formerly known as the Sites and Monuments Record) is a database of information on archaeological sites and finds, historic buildings and historic landscapes in Nottinghamshire. It forms part of a network of similar Records across the United Kingdom and includes sites dating from the Palaeolithic (from about 500,000 years ago) through to the 20th Century. There are currently over 25,000 data entries in the Nottinghamshire HER. They refer to features ranging in size from single chance finds, such as Roman coins, to former WWII airfields. The HER also contains records of Listed Buildings, other historic buildings and structures, Conservation Areas, Scheduled Monuments, historic parks and gardens and battlefields. Other resources held at our offices include reports of surveys and excavations, plans, publications and a collection of air and ground photographs. We welcome enquiries from anyone with an interest in the county’s past, whether they are members of the public interested in their own local area, students and researchers working on projects, archaeological contractors and consultants or national bodies. However please be aware that the information made available on the Gateway should not be used for commercial purposes as not all data types are included; for commercial enquiries please contact the HER via the details on the information page. Visits to the HER office to view the resources held there can be arranged, by appointment only.
