Hertfordshire HER

The Hertfordshire Historic Environment Record is the definitive source of information on the historic environment in the modern county of Hertfordshire. This resource, which is fully accessible to the public, contains over 40000 records on archaeological sites and findspots, together with buildings and landscapes of historic significance. A county of small towns, dispersed settlement and varied landscapes, Hertfordshire's historic environment is diverse. Notable are the Mesolithic and Bronze Age sites, nationally important late Iron Age and Roman remains, many medieval moated sites, historic parks, timber farm buildings, pioneering 20th century housing types (Garden Cities and New Towns), and Second World War remains. The HHER also maintains a paper archive of over 2000 unpublished fieldwork reports, together with local journals, publications and photographs, which can be consulted in person by prior appointment at its office in County Hall, Hertford. The St Albans Urban Archaeological Database is a more intensive coverage of the archaeology of 12 sq km of historic St Albans, including Roman and pre-Roman Verulamium and the medieval Abbey and town, up to AD 1600. For search purposes, the 700+ records are incorporated with the HER. The archive is kept in St Albans and can be consulted by prior appointment.
