The historic environment record (formerly the sites and monuments record) is a computerised database maintained by Kent County Council. It contains information on known archaeological sites, historic landscapes and listed buildings in Kent. The variety of sites in the HER is very wide, dating from the lower Palaeolithic period (c.450,000 BC) to the present day. The range of site types is also very large and includes iron age hillforts, Cold War bunkers, Roman villas, cement works, airfields, castles, water mills, fish, traps, pillboxes and cemeteries. The HER also includes information on stray finds, archaeological landscapes, shipwrecks and place-names. New information for the HER comes from various sources including archaeological work carried out as part of the planning and development process, original research by local societies and academic researchers, and examining sources of information such as antiquarian publications, aerial photographs and old maps. The public also provide valuable information by passing on their own information and reporting stray finds.
