The Norfolk Historic Environment Record is the definitive source of information on the historic environment in the modern county of Norfolk. This resource, which is fully accessible to the public, contains over 65,000 records of archaeological sites and finds, together with buildings and landscapes of historic significance or interest. Digital resources include digital database records of archaeological sites, finds, and buildings. Additional geospatial data including Aerial Investigation and Mapping cropmark and earthwork plots, and Historic Landscape Characterisation. The NHER also maintains an extensive paper archive of unpublished fieldwork reports, detailed finds descriptions and photographs, together with local journals and publications and a collection of over 80,000 aerial photographs which can be consulted in person by prior appointment at the Archive Centre in Norwich. Staff are available to assist with enquiries. Charges apply to commercial requests and large search requests.

All appointments must be pre-booked by contacting HER staff. The Archive Centre Search Room is open for appointments Tuesday - Wednesday 9.30am-5pm and Thursday - Friday 10am-4pm. Facilities include dedicated visitor space shared with the Norfolk Record Office, including public computer access, fiche readers, and reference library access. Please note: You will need to register for an Archives Card before your visit. Go to https://archivescard.com/ to enter your details and upload a photograph. To complete your registration, bring two of the forms of ID listed when you visit.

The Historic Environment Reference Library including over 7,000 books, journals and offprints focused on the Historic Environment. Please note that some of our archive material is now available digitally, including all 'grey literature' reports.
