The Greater Manchester Historic Environment Record is the definitive source of information on the historic environment in the modern county of Greater Manchester, which includes areas that have historically been part of Lancashire, Cheshire, Derbyshire and Yorkshire. The ten districts that make up Greater Manchester are: Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan. The resource, which is fully accessible to the public, contains over 19,000 records on archaeological sites and findspots, together with buildings and landscapes of historic significance. The GMHER also maintains a paper archive of over 4000 unpublished fieldwork reports, together with publications and photographs of local interest, which can be consulted in person by prior appointment at the GMAAS office in the University of Salford.
