The Greater London Historic Environment Record (GLHER) is maintained by Historic England and is the first point of call for those interested in the heritage of the 32 London boroughs, and the City of London, which make up the Greater London area. The GLHER was first established in 1984 by the Greater London Council and today contains over 110,000 records on London’s historic environment and its discovery. These records cover the earliest traces of human activity to the present day. The archaeological sites, monuments, buildings, artefacts, finds, landscapes and culturally important sites that make up the HER are contained within a publicly accessible web-based database and mapping system. This system uses the Arches platform developed for the Getty Conservation Institute and the World Monument Fund. The HER is updated regularly from a variety of sources including work carried out as part of the planning process, research by academic and local interest groups and researchers, and from the general public. The Heritage Gateway contains selected datasets from the HER, so for detailed commercial and research enquiries it, and our web-based record, should be used as an initial guide only and the HER team contacted for more complete information directly ([email protected]) or via our online search request form.
