The Gloucestershire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the most comprehensive computerised index to Gloucestershire's heritage. the c.128,000 records span the full range of human history from the Palaeolithic to the 20th century and include Neolithic and Bronze Age barrows, Iron Age hillforts, Roman villas, medieval settlements, field systems, industrial sites, railways and canals. Public access to the information within the HER is encouraged. All enquirers are requested to use the online form which can be accessed via this link: https://forms.gloucestershire.gov.uk/HERRequest There will generally be no charge for non-commercial enquiries from students, members of the general public and recognised archaeological and historical societies. The County Council will, however, charge £191.58 plus VAT (£229.90) for standard commercial requests and reserves the right to levy a higher charge for more extensive HER searches. In this case you are asked to contact HER staff to confirm the extra cost before placing your order. The HER also reserves the right to make a charge for research projects that request large amounts of HER data and for copying large numbers of reports. Enquiries are generally answered by e-mail, however, users can, if necessary, access HER information and/or supporting documentation in the HER offices by prior arrangement. All commercial requests will require an online payment to be made using a credit or debit card and the payment site requests an e-mail address. Gloucester City From the 1st of April 2015, records for the area of Gloucester City are included in Gloucestershire HER. These records (which previously formed a separate stand-alone HER) are currently in the process of being integrated into the County Council HER. Any enquiries for the area of Gloucester City will be treated in the same way as enquiries for the County at large. Enquiries will generally be answered by email but visits to the City Council office can be arranged in advance with the City Archaeologist.
