The Buckinghamshire Historic Environment Record is the definitive source of information on historic buildings, structures and landscapes, and known archaeological sites and finds in the county of Buckinghamshire, excluding Milton Keynes. The HER comprises a computerised database linked to digital mapping, available online on the Unlocking Buckinghamshire's Past website . A large collection of unpublished reports, paper archives, aerial photographs, maps and plans, images, books and journals can be consulted by prior appointment at our offices in Aylesbury. Note: Buckinghamshire HER records remain the copyright of Buckinghamshire County Council and the information is not licensed for commercial re-use.

The HER is located within fully accessible offices, with entrance ramp, wheelchair access, disabled toilets and touchpad-operated doors. Internet access, photocopiers and other facilities are available for visitors. Desk-space is limited and access to the HER is by prior appointment only.

Information available

Records of archaeological and historical sites, landscapes and finds from earliest human presence in Buckinghamshire to the end of the Cold war, including Listed Buildings, Scheduled Ancient Monuments, industrial and military complexes, Historic Landscape Characterisation, Historic Towns Survey etc. The HER includes detailed reports, maps and plans, photos and slides, collections of aerial photographs and a small library of books, monographs and local periodicals.
