Oldknow's lime kilns, Marple - Stockport

Bank of lime kilns built for Samuel Oldknow between 1797 and 1801. The window openings previously contained decorative Gothic tracery. The kilns are located between a canal above, and a former tramway below. This allowed the kilns to be loaded and the finished product to be taken away by boat. The Friends of Oldknow's Lime Kilns maintain the grounds below the kilns, which are being fenced off for safety reasons in 2020. The kilns have been subject to tree growth, and require repair and repointing of stonework.
