Dam wall to North Park Furnace, Linchmere / Fernhurst, Chichester - South Downs (NP)

The furnace is one of the most complete charcoal fired blast furnaces surviving from the Wealden iron industry but is in need of urgent repairs. Temporary works to protect the exposed archaeology of the casting pits from excessive water flow were undertaken in 2015. A feasibility study was undertaken with Historic England grant aid and a preferred scheme identified to secure a future for the furnace site and its environs. Final site investigations are proceeding to develop this scheme but the necessary funding needs to be secured for its implementation.
