Definition: Ecclesiastical Exemption

An exemption from various statutory restrictions and powers affecting listed and ecclesiastical buildings for those religious bodies that have in place satisfactory internal systems of control approved by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. It is not an exemption from designation as a listed building or conservation area. Those religious bodies currently exempt are called the exempt denominations.
