Definition: ICOMOS

The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), a non-governmental organisation dedicated to the conservation of the world's monuments and sites. Its work is based on the principles in the 1964 International charter on the conservation and restoration of monuments and sites (The Venice Charter) with ICOMOS created in 1964.

In order to promote the doctrine and the techniques of conservation. ICOMOS is the advisory body of the World Heritage Committee with reviews nominations of properties with cultural values proposed for inscription on the World Heritage List, as well as with comparative studies, technical assistance and reports on the state of conservation of inscribed properties.
