Definition: Secretary of State

A Secretary of State is a cabinet minister in charge of Government departments. Legislation generally only refers to Secretary of State. In this guide the current allocation of departmental responsibility has been indicated, eg the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport is responsible for listing buildings.
