Damp, Timber Decay and Sustainability Conference
When: Tuesday 4 & 11 May 2021, 2.00-3.45pm
For conservation professionals, the association of damp with timber decay needs no introduction. These are the familiar consequences of poor maintenance and ill-considered alterations. However, the need to reduce heat loss and carbon emissions is posing new challenges for the management of moisture in older buildings. A roof structure, for example, will become colder if heat transfer from the rooms below is reduced, leading to greater risk of condensation, mould growth and timber decay. Ventilation may not always be beneficial.
The aim of this virtual conference, to be held on two consecutive Tuesdays, is to review recent research and explore best practice. The first session will focus on building environments, including Historic England’s latest research. The second will consider repair options where timber has decayed.
Speakers include Morwenna Slade from Historic England; timber-decay specialist Tim Floyd; and Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings project architect Tim Greensmith.
Papers will include:
- Latest research from Historic England
- Best practice for damp survey and investigation.
- Risk of moisture accumulation owing to insulation
- Review of timber decay treatments
The event will be of interest to building conservation professionals including conservation officers, architects and surveyors.

This is the second of two virtual conferences organised by Historic England and the IHBC’s South West branch.
