A painting of a couple dancing outside The Artichoke public house in Lambeth Marsh, now Lower Marsh.
A couple dancing outside The Artichoke public house in Lambeth Marsh, now Lower Marsh. The rural nature of Lambeth Marsh still survived in places during the 18th century, but quickly disappeared under housing built for an ever-increasing population. This view painted in watercolour by Paul Sandby (1725-1809), in c. 1770 is looking north-east. The pub was rebuilt in the late 19th century and has recently been renamed The Camel and Artichoke.
