St Bartholomew's Hospital Museum

Our museum will house a new display that focuses on the pioneering women who became the first to train as doctors at St Bartholomew’s Hospital. Looking at Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman on the UK Medical Register, and the women who came after her, we aim to recognise the vast contribution of women to a variety of medical fields.

We will also be running a curatorial Twitter Takeover, answering questions about our work and giving people a behind-the-scenes look into what we do.

Our new display at St Bartholomew’s Hospital Museum will focus on the pioneering women who took the first steps to become doctors in this hospital. Using the material from our extensive archive, we will focus on Elizabeth Blackwell (the first female medical student at St Bartholomew’s Hospital and first woman on the UK Medical Register) and we will look at the changing opinions of women in medicine, recognising that the vast contribution made by women to the medical fields was made possible by trail-blazers such as Dr Blackwell.

In addition to this new display, we will be running a 'Twitter Takeover' where our archivists and curators will take over the Barts Health Archives and Museums Twitter account to give a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the work they do and answer any questions that the public have. This takeover will run from 12.00pm - 2.00pm on London History Day!
