About the Heritage Gateway Trial

‘Heritage Gateway’ is a partnership project between Historic England, ALGAO and IHBC. It enables you to find local historically important places, in addition to those that have statutory protection from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (otherwise known as The National Heritage List for England).

This Heritage Gateway Trial contains improvements in companion to the current (original) Heritage Gateway website.

It is still a ‘work in progress’.

What can I see?

Heritage Gateway contains:

10 national datasets of historic places – for England only.

  • National Heritage List for England (NHLE)*
  • Delisted Designation Decision records*
  • Non-listed (rejected) Designation Decision records *
  • Photographs of listed buildings as at February 2001 (Images of England)
  • Historic Photographs of England from the Historic England archive (Viewfinder)
  • The National Monuments Record Excavation Index *
  • The National Trust ‘Sites and Monuments Record’ *
  • The Church of England’s ‘Church Heritage Record’ *
  • Historic Milestone Society *
  • Parks and Gardens UK *

* Eight of these can be searched and shown on the map (marked * above). The rest are available by the Quick Search only. Not all data providers are able to offer mapped data.

52 (out of a potential 84) are local datasets. These are provided by local authorities and national parks (Historic Environment Records).
Not all local authorities provide information to Heritage Gateway. This means that some parts of the country show fewer records. Contact details for the local Historic Environment Records can be found on the original Heritage Gateway website.

30 of these 52 local data sets (Historic Environment Records) can be searched and shown on the map. The rest are available using the Quick Search only. Not all data providers are able to offer mapped data.

How accurate is this information?

The Heritage Gateway Trial does not contain up-to-date information and should not be used for planning purposes.

Please note that the search results show slightly different information depending on the data provider. This is because each data provider chooses what information to make available.

The National Heritage List (NHLE) returns a maximum of 1,000 records even if there are more results that match your search.

The Greater London dataset returns a maximum of 10,000 records even if there are more results that match your search.

How do I use it?

Quick Search

  • Use this for keyword text searches for types of sites, such as ‘asylum’.
  • We recommend that you use the map search if you are looking for a place. The Quick text search may show more than you expect. For example a search for ‘York’ will return ‘York Road’ in Reading as well as the historic city of York.

Map search

  • Use this to find things in a specific location e.g. search by post code, town, or grid reference. This trial does not include the ability to search by Conservation Area, Parish or County.
  • The map search can use these grid reference types:
    • National Grid prefix followed by six figures, e.g. SE598517 .
Less than six figures will return an error message.
More than six figures searches a different location to the one you probably intended e.g. using ‘SU9700277033’ to find Windsor Castle will show the village of Yapton in West Sussex instead (SU970027).
    • 12 figure grid reference.
Easting and northing must be separated by a comma e.g. 504790, 249287.
Searching for less than 12 figures will not return any results.
  • The search radius is set at 1km.

Please be patient when using this Trial version.

With over 60 resources containing thousands of sites, it can sometimes take a few minutes to find and display them all.

Not available on this Heritage Gateway Trial site

The trial site is a ‘work in progress’ and does not include:

  • Advanced search by:
    • County, District or Parish
    • Monument Type
    • Period
    • Date when a site was listed
    • Associated person or architect
  • Ability to limit searches to specific datasets
  • Searching the map by drawing lines or polygons
  • Adjustable search radius
  • 32 (out of a national coverage of 84) Historic Environment Records are not available in this service
  • Satellite view option for the map

Please use the original Heritage Gateway site if you want to use these advanced features.

Known issues

We are aware of the following issues with the Trial website:

  • Map search results sometimes include coloured lines. This is because of the icons on the map taking time to download. It can be resolved by zooming in further and waiting for the icons to finish loading.
  • Not all the datasets can be searched or shown on the map. Not all data providers are able to offer mapped data.
  • Full record details for Delisted Designation Decisions and Non-listed (rejected) Desigation Decisions are not available. They can be searched and viewed on a map. Full record details are available on the original Heritage Gateway website.
