Description

A collection of photographs either taken by or showing William Alfred Evan Call (1878 – 1965), a photographer and puppeteer based in Monmouth, Wales. He is usually recorded on his photographs as W A Call. Many of the negatives taken by him have prints in the Red Box Collection.

W A Call was born in Paris, France in 1878 and later married Mary Blight Uren in Cornwall in 1902. The couple are believed to have had four children. In the late 1930s he created ‘The Cambria Puppets’, a troupe of marionette puppets with whom he toured the country, performing in places like Cheltenham, Blackpool and Cambridge. He also performed regularly in a small theatre above his photography shop in Monmouth. He died on 15 January 1965 at the age of 87.

Prints and copy negatives of his photographs are also catalogued in the Early Photographic Print Collection (RBO01), the Woolworths Collection (FWW01), the Red Box Collection (RCH01/006), Non-RCHME Archaeological Photographs (NON01) and a number of albums.
