The palace was built for Archbishop Walter de Grey in the 13th century, with alterations made throughout the 14th, 15th, 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. It has an L-shaped plan, and the porch is situated in the centre of the west elevation. The porch is accessed by a set of wide steps, and has an arcade of three arches with ogee hoods. The porch ceiling is vaulted and was remodelled by Thomas Atkinson between 1766 and 1769.
