Description

This commemorative pillar is one of two that originally marked the site of an early 14th century town gate. When the adjoining town wall was demolished the gate was retained and used as a toll barrier. After New Gate was finally demolished in 1782, this commemorative pillar was erected on the site.

A plaque now adorns the pillar: "Site of New Gate (Removed 1782) in 13th century Town Wall. Oswestry District Civic Society, 1972"
