The Old Hall started life as a town house built for the Earl and Countess of Shrewsbury in 1572-3. Mary Queen of Scots was held here on a number of occasions during her imprisonment by Queen Elizabeth I. The builidng was refronted in the early 18th century, by which time it had become an inn.
