The Empire Stadium, as it was originally known, was built by architects Sir John Simpson and Maxwell Ayerton, and the engineer Sir Owen Williams in 1922-3 for the British Empire Exhibition. It became the national football stadium and held the FA Cup final from 1923. This stadium was demolished in late 2000 to make way for a new stadium which opened in 2007.
