Description

The Royal Hop Pole dates from the late 15th century, also being remodelled and extended in the late 18th century, when it became important as one of the town's main coaching inns. The first bay of the hotel, on the left, was at one time a separate, temperance establishment called 'The Riverside', with its own front door to the left of the near window. By 1957 it had once again been incorporated in the main hotel premises. The Y.M.C.A. at 97 Church Street is seen beyond and to the far right is Rowland Hill House, at 98 Church Street, the town's post office, dating from the early 19th century.
