Description

Until 1930 the Abbey Mill had been equipped with four traditional wooden sluice gates to regulate the flow of water. In 1930 the large guillotine flood gate seen here on the right, replaced the old sluices. An even greater flow rate was regarded as being desirable, so in 1935 a larger, automatic radial sluice was fitted in addition to the 1930 gate. This new gate's massive concrete counterweights can be seen to the left in the photograph, also in operation.
