The photographer’s notes state: ‘Old stone wall, south side Fairfax Street. The RIver Froom is under this street, and this wall is a remnant of the city defences along the south bank of the river.'
Noted in red: ‘This rough stone wall was still existing in August 1955, but the 3 windows in the upper part had been much altered. A low red brick story had been added, with 2 small windows, to the top. The two buildings on the right had gone. By the end of 1955 or early in 1956 there was nothing left of the old wall.'
