The photographer’s notes state: ‘Inner courtyard of the Merchant Venturers' Almshouses, looking N. Mr H. Chapell, the chief brother and one of the old sisters are standing at the back. This part of the almshouses escaped from damage in the above air raids.'
Noted in red: ‘The west wing, just out of the photograph to the left was, however, mostly destroyed. What was left of it was demolished between March and Sept. 1942 to make room for the roundabout.'
