Description

This is a photograph of an image printed in a book. It is believed that the image was photographed by PEW Street c1920-1950.

The photographer's notes state: 'Copy. The parish church. Gravestone to Mary Smith of Southwark north of the church. (From an illustration in "Orpington from Saxon Times to the Great War", published 1919. Photo taken by Mr Harchild of Sherlies, probably in the late 1890's)

The gravestone is engraved: 'Here Lyeth the Body of Mary the wife JOHN SMITH of the parish of St Olave Southwark who Died March the 17th 1755 Aged 58 Years,

Here Lyeth Mary Never Was Contrary to me nor her Neighbours Around her Like Turtle & Dove We Lived In Love And I left her Where I may Find her

Also here Lieth the Body of JOHN SMITH Husband of the above MARY SMITH, who departed this Life Aug'st 24th 1776 in the 86 Year of his Age'.
