The cinema was designed by architects Percy Browne and Kenneth Glover, and was originally built for Associated Provincial Picture Houses. APPH was eventually taken over by Provincial Cinematograph Theatres Ltd, who commissioned this photograph to be taken. Two years after this photograph was taken, a fire destroyed much of the building, but it was subsequently rebuilt. The cinema was demolished in the early 1990s, and a supermarket now occupies the site.
