Norman Wilkinson (1878 - 1971) was a celebrated artist specialising in marine subjects, and was employed by Canadian Pacific Railways to produce paintings to be reproduced in adveritising for Canadian Pacific ocean liner services. Wilkinson was notably employed during World War One to develop camouflage patterns for the Royal Naval fleet, creating the distinctive 'dazzle camouflage' patterns of the period. The photograph was commissioned by Canadian Pacific Railways.
