Description

The Roman Baths and Temple of Sulis Minerva were built in 60-70 AD from timber, Mendip lead and stone. The complex was designed around the site of the Sacred Spring, which supplied hot water to the Baths and was the focus for worship in the Temple. The baths fell into disrepair over the centuries and the remains were covered. In 1881 the Great Bath was uncovered and by the end of the decade they were open to the public. The colonnade surrounding the Great Bath dates to the 1890s.
