Description

The Norman castle was begun in circa 1068, soon after the Normans reached the south-west of England, with major rebuilding works taking place in the early fourteenth century to replace timber structures with stone, including the stone 'shell keep' shown atop the motte in this illustration. This illustration was reproduced in black and white on page 9 of the 1992 English Heritage guidebook for the castle.
