BOVEY TRACEY MORTONHAMPSTEAD ROAD SX 87 NW (north side), Bovey Tracey Nos. 1, 3 and 4 Atway Cottages 5/79 (formerly listed as Nos 1, 2 & 3 - Atway Cottages) 4.4.78 II GV
Row of 3 cottages built at right-angles to the road. Late C16 or C17 with later additions. Solid walls, No.1 covered with mostly old roughcast (gable to road rebuilt in concrete block in 1984), Nos. 3 and 4 with C20 render. Thatched roofs.
Nos.1 and 3 have a single roof with rendered chimney stack in each gable and a third on ridge, off-centre to left. No.4, set back a little, has rendered stack in right-hand gable. 2 storeys. No.1 has front 2 windows wide; the windows grouped to right. In ground storey, a C20 gabled entrance-porch, off-centre to left; 2 windows to left of it, one to right. All the windows have late C19 or early C20 wood casements with 2 panes per light. Gable fronting road has 2 windows in each storey, matching those in the front wall, with 2 lights each. No.3 is 2 windows wide; doorway to left of ground storey, 3 windows to right. All windows except the right-hand ground-storey window have C20 wood casements with small panes. No.4 is 2 windows wide; similar casements to No.3 in second storey and in right-hand window of ground storey. Late C20 window to left of latter; late C20 door on extreme left. Interiors: No.1 not inspected, but ground storey (seen through window) has chamfered ceiling-beams and a large open fireplace in south-west gable. No.3 has a large fireplace in north-east gable of ground-storey room, this having a chamfered wood lintel with step-stops and 2 notches at each end. Upper storey of No.3 and all of No.4 not inspected. The cottages make an excellent group with Atway Farmhouse (q.v.) and occupy an important position beside the A382.
