House. Early C19 remodelling of mid C18 building with later alterations and additions. Rubble, rendered, formerly lined out and now painted in (at time of survey, December 1984), limestone dressings, double Roman tiled roof of 2 and 3 spans with raised coped verges and gable stacks, pantiled roof to wing. 2 storeys and 3 windows, first floor has 16-pane sashes, ground floor has 2 C19 French windows, central 6-panelled and fielded door with plain fanlight, open pediment on consoles; glazed canopy on slender cast iron piers along ground floor, trellis work attached to wall at first floor framing windows; parapet and coping ramped down to each side over single storey wing, to right with similar French window, to left with small bay, 3 lights to front of 6 panes each with overlights, 2 lights to each side, dentil cornice. Right return has single storey pantiled wing with four 2-light casements, not rendered. Left return has 3 gable ends, one stepped and ramped, not rendered, 2 gables to left have 16-pane sash at ground and first floor, with segmental brick heads, C20 door and conservatory to left, 9-pane sash at ground floor right; gable to right has two 2-light attic casements. Rear has 2 C19 additions of 2 storeys and single storey wing to left, varied windows, including in central block two 6-pane lights of varied sizes and door with overlight, all with segmental heads, 16-pane sash and small 8-pane sash at first floor. Originally named after Portugal Laurels, in Chew Magna tradition of naming houses after trees; original plan of central block with 2 wings similar to The Beeches (q.v.).
