SWIMBRIDGE SWIMBRIDGE SS 62 NW 11/211 The Coach and Horses

House probably originally farmhouse, later an inn. Early C16 with possibly earlier fabric concealed extended in C19. Whitewashed rendered stone and cob. Concrete tile roof with gable ends. Stack on left end and lateral stack to C19 extension at right end and tall rendered lateral hall stack to front with offsets. Originally 3-room through-passage plan with bay added at right end and kitchen extension to rear with slated lean-to roof. Projecting stair turret (staircase now removed) to rear of hall also with slated lean-to roof. 2 storeys. 4 window range of 4-paned horned sashes. Ground floor has 3 similar sashes and a 2-light casement at right end. Near base of hall stack is a small 2-light window, 3 panes per light across the angle of the projection, possibly inserted when a bread oven was demolished. 6 panelled door to left.

Interior: part of screen survives dividing hall and inner room, 5 panel; wide with deeply chamfered muntins and to upper part of the panels. Cut away to provide a serving hatch to the bar situated in the inner room when the farmhouse changed to become an inn. The hall/through-passage screen has been removed and a settle inserted along half the length. Rear through-passage doorway with chamfered surround and old door. 2 panelled door to lower end doorway. A fire in late C20 destroyed the thatch and roofstructure, but jettying at each end of hall suggests a phased insertion of floors, probably in C17 to a former open hall house. Old doorcase to rear kitchen has jambs hollowed out to admit cider/beer barrels. Dairy adjoining at upper end retains some original fittings.
