5/5 Obelisk in the Churchyard of St John Baptist
-
GV II
Commemorative monument, C19 (early). Stone (possibly Portland). In form of an obelisk on square base; stepped plinth, then the base, with flat corner pilasters each face flanking inscribed panels: inscriptions now badly worn but one date, 1842, still just decipherable; heavy cornice with egg and dart cornice capped with flat incised pediments with Soanian acroterions: the obelisk set on this base, rising to about 3.5 metres overall. This monument, near the North boundary and opposite No 5 Church Terrace, stands solitary in an otherwise levelled churchyard, it contributes visually both to the church and to the houses of Church Terrace.
