SX4754 THE PROMENADE, Hoe 740-1/57/307 Prince Christian Victor Memorial 01/05/75 (Formerly Listed as: THE HOE, Plymouth Prince Christian Victor Memorial)

GV II

War memorial. 1902 erected in memory of Christian Victor, Prince of Schleswig-Holstein, who died in the Boer War. Polished pink granite partly fluted obelisk on a plinth with bronze plaques, set on a stepped granite base. Square plan. To each side of the plinth is a segmental-arched panel, 2 of the panels depict Boer War engagements, the front panel depicts the war hero being carried aloft by an angel; the other panel is of a heavenly scene with angels. There is a low perimeter fence with granite bollards linked by chains. One of a fine group of memorials on the Hoe. (The Buildings of England: Pevsner N: Devon: London: 1989-: 665).
