II GV 2.
Late C18 refronting of C17 building 2 storeys, stuccoed ground floor, (formerly brick) with oversailing timber framed 1st floor faced with colourwashed mathematical tiles on moulded band at foot of oversail. Hipped slate roof low pitch. Ground fooor has unsymmetrical early C19 shop front, the left hand window modernised, that to right 5 Panes wide, with pilastered, panelled and glazed door between. Shop front framed by narrow Tuscan pilasters, frieze and cornice. Formerly to right, in same framework, was a yard entry now replaced by modern, early C19 style, shop front. The front to St Thomas's Square qv has 2 flush framed sashes on lst floor. On ground floor altered small early C19 double shop front, with window of 12 panes. Centred modern glazed door replacing panelled one, with blocked rectangular fanlight, pilaster frame and entablature removed. Modern, early C19 style. Shop front to right, returned round corner.
The building was originally the Vine Inn. Through to rear is original staircase, closed string and turned balusters.
Nos 28-28A form a group with Nos 2 & 4 St Thomas's Square
Nos 25 to 32 (consec) and the Market Hall form a group.
