MARLBOROUGH CROSS LANE SU 1869 1/353 CIements Meadow II House. Dated 1902; possibly by C E Ponting, architect and surveyor for Marlborough College. Flemish bond diapered red and blue brick with tumbled brick gables and stone dressings. Slate 3-span gabled roof. Brick axial stack, each with 4 engaged octagonal shafts. Plan: 3 short parallel ranges, side-by-side, with entrance in the centre of north front, lower one-storey and attic range on the left (east) side and a short axial range at right angles on the right hand (west) side. Vernacular revival style. Exterior: 2 storeys. North front has 3 gables with long bands of stone mullion windows on ground and first floors, the first floor incorporates 3 large carved stone coats of arms, the ground floor with small integral stone porch with carved arms in its pediment and with canted bay to left in angle with projecting service range which is single storey and attic with a small keyed bullseye in the gable end. There is a small enclosed service yard on the left (east) side. The south garden front has 3 symmetrical gables with large 3, 4 and 5-light stone mullion transom windows and large stone canted bay window at centre of ground floor. Short axial range set back on left (west) with porch in angle and gable end of lower service range set back on right (east) with 4-light stone mullion window, bullseye in the gable, and small single storey range to right with stack. All leaded pane casement windows. Ornate rainwater heads. Interior: not inspected.
